SCRIPT AND VOCABULARY (Tradução Em Português)

Earthquakes are caused by the movement of the huge tectonic plates that continents sit on.

==> huge = enormes
==> that continents sit on = onde estão situados os continentes

What happens is they come together and one - in this case, the pacific plate - is moving below the Japanese or Eurasian plate.  And it causes that plate to bend when it sticks there.  

==> they come together = eles se encontram
==> bend = "dobrar", envergar
==> stick = ficar preso

There will be a bit too much friction.  It will stick.  Pressure builds up until, suddenly, it's released - and flick!  

==> (Pressure) builds up = (A pressão) aumenta
==> suddenly = de repente
==> it's released = é liberado
==> flick = som de uma "chicotada", som de um movimento rápido

Have a look at this.  Now this is the tectonic plate that Japan is set on.  And here's the Pacific plate coming down underneath it.  And normally they want to move together at about 9 cm a year, but sometimes they get stuck.  And when they get stuck, the energy of the "moving together" gets translated to strain energy, literally flex(ing) and bending these huge slabs of rock.  And energy builds and builds, flexing and bending more and more.

When they finally slip, that stored energy, all that twist and bend in the rock gets released into sudden movement ... like that!

==> like that = assim , desta forma

As you can see, it literally flicks up, moving the ocean floor above it, which moves the ocean, causing a tsunami.

So here we've got a bigger submarine version of what's going on.  And this gives a representation of what's been happening 24 km below the ocean surface in the Japan trench.  

==> what's going on = o que está acontecendo

And these things work in what they called a slip-stick way.  Most of the time, they're suck, but occasionally they slip.  And that's what an earthquake is.  So we've got it here.  This is  bent up here - full of pent up energy waiting to slip.  And when the slip happens, that energy gets released into the ocean, causing a series of tsunami waves, moving in both directions across the Pacific.

Sheldon: Do you realize what this means? All I need is a healthy ovum and I can grow my own Leonard Nimoy!
Penny: Okay, all I’m giving you is the napkin, Sheldon.

Penny: Here. Open it.
Leonard: Oh, a gift certificate for motorcycle lessons. Very thoughtful.
Penny: Yeah, and I checked. Not letting the bike fall on you while standing still is lesson one.
Leonard: Oh, then, I think you’ll appreciate what I got you.
Penny: Okay. 101 Totally Cool Science Experiments for Kids.
Leonard: You know, ’cause you’re so into science.
Penny: Sheldon! What did you do?!
Sheldon: I know! It’s not enough, is it? Here.
Penny: Leonard, look! Sheldon’s hugging me.
Leonard: It’s a Saturnalia miracle.

Penny chega no apartamento de Leonard e Sheldon, deseja Feliz Natal e pergunta pela perna de Leonard. Leo diz que está bem e agradece (thanks for asking) e pede para ela entrar (come on in). Sheldon vê Penny entrar e diz que ela está lá para trocar presentes (exchange gifts) e diz que está preparado para o que ela tiver para oferecer (prepared for whatever you have to offer).

Ela lhe entrega o presente a antes de abrir ele diz que está tendo alguns problemas digestivos (digestive stress) e se se ausentar (excuse myself) abruptamente não é para ela ficar preocupada (don’t be alarmed). Ele fica um tanto desapontado quando encontra um guardanapo (a napkin) e ela pede que ele o vire do outro lado (turn it over). O guardanapo diz “vida longa e prosperidade, Leonard Nimoy).

Penny diz que ele, Leonard Nimoy foi ao restaurante (came into the restaurant) e pede desculpas pelo guardanapo estar sujo (sorry the napkin’s dirty) pois ele limpou sua boca nele (wiped his mouth with it). Sheldon fica petrificado ao saber que possui o DNA de Leonard Nimoy (possess the DNA of Leonard Nimoy). Penny acha que isso é ruim e diz que pelo menos ele o assinou. Sheldon ainda extasiado pergunta se ela sabe o que aquilo significa (do you know what this means) e explica que tudo o que precisa é de um óvulo saudável (a healthy ovum) para criar seu próprio Leonard Nimoy.

Ele diz que volta rápido (be right back). Enquanto isso Penny dá a Leonard seu presente de Natal, um vale aulas de moto (a gift certificate for motorcycle lessons) e ele diz que ela é muito atenciosa (thoughtful). Penny concorda e diz que a lição um é não deixar a moto cair em cima de você (not letting the bike fall on you) enquanto você estiver em pé. Leonard então lhe dá seu presente, 101 Experiências Químicas Muito Legais para Crianças e ainda brinca, porque ela gosta muito de Ciência (you’re so into Science).

Sheldon chega com vários presentes e ela pergunta, “O que você fez?”(What did you do?). Ele acha que não é suficiente e lhe dá um abraço. Ela fica surpresa e diz “Olha, Sheldon está me abraçando!” (Look, Sheldon is hugging me!).
